Painting Medium
The essential companion to oil paint. A painting medium is the most versatile tool in the oil painter's workflow — used at every stage of a painting to adjust consistency, flow, and drying time, without compromising the integrity of the paint film.
The SCHAAL Painting Medium is a carefully balanced blend of linseed oil and mineral spirits. Its formula has been designed around a single principle : neither too much oil, nor too much solvent. Too much oil in a medium risks weakening the paint film over time and increasing the risk of yellowing. Too much solvent accelerates drying excessively and can cause the paint film to become brittle and prone to cracking. This medium strikes the right balance — fluid enough to improve workability, stable enough to preserve the long-term integrity of your work.

How to use Add a small amount to paint directly on the palette, or use to condition the brush before loading with color. Increase the proportion of medium gradually from the first to the final layers to respect the fat over lean principle — early layers should remain lean, with richer medium use reserved for upper layers. Avoid overuse : a few drops are sufficient to modify the paint's behaviour significantly.
Important note This medium contains mineral spirits. Work in a well-ventilated space and avoid prolonged skin contact. For a solvent-free alternative in your upper layers, consider using our Stand Oil (45 Poise) or Linseed Oil directly.
