Medium Gel Quick Drying

A high-viscosity painting medium designed for artists who work with texture, impasto, and expressive brushwork. The SCHAAL Medium Gel adds body and transparency to oil paint simultaneously, a combination that neither straight oil nor standard mediums can achieve alone.

Formulated with a gel-based oil compound and cobalt drier, the SCHAAL Medium Gel is designed for artists who need both textural control and accelerated drying. The addition of cobalt siccative significantly reduces drying time compared to conventional gel mediums, making it particularly valuable for layered techniques where waiting between sessions is not an option.

How to use Mix a small amount of Medium Gel directly into the paint on the palette. The more you add, the greater the body and transparency of the mixture. Because of its fast-drying formula, it is best suited to mid and upper layers, never in the initial lean layers of a painting. Avoid mixing with slow-drying mediums such as walnut oil or stand oil in the same layer, as this works against the drying action of the cobalt siccative.

Important note This medium contains cobalt drier, a metallic siccative. Use in moderation, excessive amounts can cause the paint film to dry too rapidly on the surface while remaining wet underneath, which leads to wrinkling and long-term cracking. A small amount goes a long way. As with all cobalt-based products, work in a well-ventilated space and avoid prolonged skin contact.
