Handmade Artists Colors

francien krieg

Francien Krieg is a Dutch artist who has been working as a painter for over 25 years. Her work explores the human condition through figurative painting and spans multiple series, including portraits of young men, boxers, women with cats, and more contemplative works that deal with vulnerability, connection, and the passage of time. Her paintings have been exhibited internationally in museums and galleries.

In recent years, she has increasingly shifted toward alla prima painting, working more directly and intuitively with color. This transition has led her to use stronger, more vibrant hues and to focus on immediacy and presence in the painted surface.

She enjoys working with SCHAAL Colors because of the high pigment load and the strength of the colors, which suit her more direct way of painting. The paint has a firm, well-balanced consistency—neither too thin nor too thick—which gives her both control and freedom while working. She also values SCHAAL as a young, artisanal company.
