Handmade Artists Colors
After graduating from the École Pivaut, where I studied illustration, editorial design and press, I began my career as an independent illustrator and painter. Over time, I felt a growing need to understand what lay behind colour itself: the material, the pigment, the chemistry of the binder, and the hand that shapes it. Studying the masters of classical painting, I became increasingly interested in the knowledge painters once possessed as a matter of course, before industrialisation standardised and simplified their materials. Realising that a painter's understanding of pigments, drying oils and mediums was once inseparable from their practice transformed my work entirely.
What struck me most was the gap between what we are taught in art school and what painters historically knew. Before factory-made paints removed those decisions from the artist's hands, mastery included controlling every variable: the grinding of pigments, the selection of binders, the preparation of the support. That level of material knowledge gives a degree of optical and technical control that cannot be replicated by simply opening a commercial product. I became convinced this foundation was not a historical curiosity, but something still entirely relevant.
As a user of commercially available fine art products myself, I found that something essential was consistently missing: pigment concentration, the quality of the binders, and that depth of colour which serious painting demands. Most commercial paints compromise on pigment load in favour of consistency and cost. The answer was clear: I had to produce my own paints.
In 2019, I founded Schaal Colors to share this approach and respond to a demand I recognised in many other artists. The range covers extra-fine oil paints and gouaches, produced from artist-grade pigments ground with linseed and walnut oils on a three-roller mill, in my workshop in France. Every batch is made entirely by hand, with no outsourcing. As a working painter myself, I continue to use and test each colour in my own practice, which remains the only standard I trust. Schaal brings together the formulations of classical painting and the rigour of modern production, guided by one consistent principle: the paint must serve the painter.
My range of extra-fine oil colors is the result of meticulous and precise craftsmanship. Each pigment is finely ground in a unique blend of linseed and walnut oil, revealing the intensity and depth of every shade for vibrant and long-lasting creations. Bring your paintings to life with premium-quality paints.
Discover my extra-fine, professional-quality gouaches, formulated with organic honey from the Vendée region. Designed with minimal filler and high-quality ingredients, they offer intense, deep colors and a creamy texture that is ideal for wet-on-wet techniques without needing excess water. Thanks to their high pigment concentration, Schaal gouaches ensure great versatility: they can be applied in thick layers or as washes, all while maintaining remarkable intensity.
I carefully select exceptional pigments to create pure colors, most often single-pigment and filler-free. The result? A creamy, intensely concentrated paint, suitable for all techniques and all artists. Because your art deserves the best, I am committed to offering superior quality products where every color is respected.
