Solvents are primarily used to thin paint during the initial stages of a work and to clean brushes after a session.
When used at the start of a painting, they reduce viscosity and accelerate drying. This process allows for fast-drying underlayers before you begin building up with richer, oil-loaded paint, a technique known as the fat over lean rule.
Please use them sparingly and only in lower layers, as excessive use can weaken the paint film over time.

The studio-friendly solvent. Odourless mineral spirits is a highly refined petroleum distillate from which the aromatic hydrocarbons responsible for the characteristic sharp smell of standard white spirit have been removed. The result is a solvent with identical working properties but significantly reduced fumes, making it the preferred choice for artists working in enclosed or shared studio spaces, classrooms, and home environments.
The SCHAAL Odourless Mineral Spirits is artist-grade, free from residual sulphur and aromatic compounds that can interact with pigments and degrade the paint film over time. It evaporates completely and leaves no residue.
Key properties
How to use Use sparingly in the early, lean layers of a painting to thin paint and accelerate drying. Avoid overuse in the upper layers, as excessive solvent weakens the paint film over time. Ideal for brush cleaning between sessions and for general studio maintenance.
Important note Odourless does not mean non-toxic. Although the aromatic compounds have been removed, mineral spirits still emits vapours that require adequate ventilation. Do not use in a fully enclosed space without air circulation, and avoid prolonged skin contact.
For a traditional solvent with greater dissolving power, see our Rectified Turpentine. For solvent-free working in the upper layers, explore our Stand Oil (45 Poise) or Painting Medium.
