drying oils

Not all oils behave the same way. Linseed oil offers excellent film strength and durability. Walnut oil dries more slowly, stays flexible, and is less prone to yellowing, making it particularly suited to light colours and glazing work.

Both can be used to adjust consistency, extend working time, or rework areas of a painting. All oils offered here are artist-grade, selected for their purity and long-term performance.

Stand Oil (45 Poise)

Stand oil is linseed oil that has been heat-polymerised under controlled conditions — a process that fundamentally transforms its properties. The result is a thick, honey-like oil with outstanding self-levelling ability and one of the most archival profiles of any painting medium.

Key properties

  • Exceptional self-levelling — reduces visible brushstrokes for a smooth, enamel-like surface
  • High viscosity (45 poise) adds body and transparency, ideal for glazing
  • Significantly slower drying than raw linseed oil, maximising working time in upper layers
  • Greatly enhances the depth and luminosity of color in final layers
  • One of the most durable and archival oils available for professional oil painting
  • Does not yellow more than standard linseed oil despite its thicker consistency

How to use Stand oil should always be used in the upper layers of a painting, in accordance with the fat over lean principle. Mix in small quantities with paint directly, or combine with a solvent to reduce viscosity and improve flow. A little goes a long way.

For everyday use and strong binding in mid layers, see our Linseed Oil. For light colors and extended wet-on-wet work, discover our Walnut Oil.
