L'essence de térébenthine est une huile essentielle naturelle obtenue par distillation et rectification du baume résineux du pin. C'est le solvant le plus utilisé pour la peinture à l'huile. Son odeur est tout fait à caractéristique. Grâce à ces propriétés, elle est idéale pour créer des médiums et des vernis (par dissolution de cires ou de résines naturelles (comme la résine Damar, Mastic ou Colophane).
Elle est aussi adaptée au nettoyage des pinceaux.
